had encountered and I did not believe she was a bad person. Even though I disagreed with her mechanism of coping, I respected her and I provided the best care to her and her baby. In Mike’s situation, he confided to his nurse that he does not wish to continue with treatment and expects her to act on this. Ignoring Mike’s wishes not only would disrespect him, but also belittle him by making him think he is not capable of making decisions regarding his own life. Likewise, the nurse must also respect Mike’s parents. Family-centered care is being incorporated more in health care practice and the entire family is now being included in medical decisions. The nurse should respect how the parents believe that continuing treatment is vital for the wellbeing of their son. The nurse should also respect that the parents are not willing to give up on their son and are desperate to try anything to save him.
